Unity in Diversity

Though I am a non religious person who doesn’t believe in the so called distinctions made by man, but, it was something interesting that was observed today that prompted me to write this.

Whenever the word ‘religion’ is heard, it generally brings images of extremists painting a rather poor picture of their respective religions. Hence, for me this word, most of the times, brings a negative connotation along with it. But not today!

During the dinner today, it was observed that among all my flat mates who are living under 1 roof here, we have one (minimum) from each of the 4 prominent religions prevalent in India – Hindu, Muslim, Sikh, Christian. And also we have at least one from 4 corners of India – North, South, East and West.

Everyone from a non-chicken eating Brahmin to the Chicken Biryani loving devout Muslim sit and eat their meals together here. Everyone from Chandigarh to Chennai, from Baroda to Kolkata is a part of this family at Hemu Vila, 3rd Floor.

Today, on the first anniversary of the Mumbai Train Blasts, we are proud to represent all the religious and regional diversities of India in this 3 BHK of ours!!!

Hi from a new blogger:)
Loved to read about your wonderful friends and you sharing/having your food together. A poignant piece indeed.
I come from a Hindu country, but not a Hindu. I live in a Muslim country presently but am not a Muslim. I have friends who are Hindus, Muslims, Christians, Sikhs and other religion too and a few atheists too. Mind you, good friends! I have friends who hail from all over the world.
To be tolerant of other religions is the least we could do for peace and harmony in this present world.
Wish there were many more who believed in this.
Cheers!

Now that's something almost unique to India. Indians going abroad (of every religion and caste) do tend to stick together too.

Reminded me of the time I was flying to US. I met two guys in the airport, and we were from three corners of India, flying to three corners of US.

@fleiger: wow.. that is something.. 3 corners of india to 3 corners of US... hehehe...

The diversity can be found at many places, whats special is that this diversity has survived for past many centuries and lived harmoniously for most of time, barring some exceptions.

There are no issues except when one set of people start believing there thought is superior to others and try to enforce on them. This becomes the stepping stone for disaster.

Yu must be enjoying in the community.

Point very well noted. And we are happy that in our present generation, we don't care much about religious restrictions and inhibitions. At many places, we come across the mini India situations, Indian Railways is another example...
